Stephen W. Sanger
Stephen W. Sanger is the former chief executive officer and chairman of General Mills, a consumer food products company. He held both posts until 2007, when he retired as CEO. In 2008, he relinquished his post as Chairman of the Board. He is currently the director of Wells Fargo and Company.
Stephen Sanger was born on April 10, 1946. He is a local from Cincinnati, Ohio. He got his business administration degree from DePauw University in 1968 and earned his MBA degree in 1970 from the University of Michigan. He worked in the marketing and sales department for Proctor and Gamble in Cincinnati.
Sanger’s career in General Mills started in 1974 when he started working in the marketing division. He was then promoted to the position of general manager and vice president of the Northstar Division in 1983. From 1986 to 1988, he was president of Yoplait USA. He then worked for Big G Cereal Division, where he served as the company’s president from 1988 to 1991. He became senior vice president of General Mills in the year 1989. By 1991, he was the executive vice president of General Mills. He was appointed as vice chairman to the board of directors a year after.
In 1993, Stephen Sanger was named the president of General Mills. He held this position for two years then got promoted to CEO and chairman. As was previously stated, he retired as the company’s CEO on 2007 and as chairman in 2008.
He is currently a director of various businesses including Target Corporation, Pfizer Inc. and Wells Fargo. He is the latter’s director since 2003. He also served as a member of the board for Donaldson, Dayton Hudson, Minnesota Business Partnership, and Grocery Manufacturers of America. Sanger is also the member of the board for the Guthrie Theatre, Catalyst, and the National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy. He is also a member of the Business Council and the US Advisory Committee for Trade Policy and Negotiation.
