Philip Calvin McGraw, best known as Dr. Phil, is an American television personality, author and former psychologist. He is currently the host of his own television show called Dr. Phil, which debuted in 2002. He first grabbed the American public’s attention during his appearances in The Oprah Winfrey Show back in the 1990s.
Dr. Phil was born on September 1, 1950 in Vinita, Oklahoma. He graduated from Midwestern State University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology. He earned his Master’s degree in experimental psychology and his clinical psychology PhD from the University of North Texas.
When Oprah Winfrey hired Dr. Phil McGraw’s legal consulting firm from CSI to prepare her for the Amarillo beef trial, she was greatly impressed with him for winning her case. After that, she invited him to come out on her show on a weekly basis as a “Relationship and Life Strategy Expert.”
By 2002, Dr. Phil McGraw launched his own daily television show, Dr. Phil, produced by Winfrey’s Harpo Productions. The show is basically an advice program where he handles different topics while giving advice to his guest’s problems.
In 2003, Dr. Phil entered the weight loss business selling weight loss products such as energy shakes, energy bars and supplements. These products were promoted on his show.
In addition to his television show, he has also published many books such as Life Strategies and Family First, both of which made it to the bestsellers list.
In the latter part of 2007, Dr. Phil started promoting the extension for his Dr. Phil show called The Doctors. The show is hosted by television personality and ER physician Dr. Travis Stork (The Bachelor); Dr. Lisa Masterson, an obstetrician/gynecologist; Dr. Andrew Ordon, a plastic surgeon; and Dr. Jim Sears, a pediatrician. Masterson, Ordon, and Sears appeared on the Dr. Phil show back in 2007-2008 season. The Doctors debuted on September 8, 2008.
