Laura Schlessinger is a cultural and moral commentator known for her radio call-in show called Dr. Laura. Born in 1947 in Brooklyn, New York, she once described her childhood as an unpleasant experience because she belonged to a dysfunctional family. Nevertheless, she has since moved on from that experience and created a successful life.

After graduating with a bachelor’s degree from SUNY Stony Brook, Laura Schlessinger went to Columbia University where she received her Ph.D. in Physiology. She also received a certification in Marriage, Family and Child Counseling from the University of Southern California (USC). For several years, Laura Schlessinger concentrated on teaching. She held teaching positions in the University of California, Los Angeles; University of California, Irvine; and Pepperdine University.

In 1974, with the help of the Bill Ballance Show, Laura Schlessinger started her career in radio broadcasting. After her stint with Bill Ballance, she did several shows on her own in small radio stations. Her big break came when she became part of a regular show on KFI in the 1980s.

The Dr. Laura Show began airing shortly afterwards and it became syndicated in 1994. She describes her show as a moral health program that dispenses advice and suggestions to its callers.

Described as an outspoken critic of controversial issues, Laura Schlessinger tackles controversial issues like euthanasia, abortion, and same-sex marriage. Her radio show features short editorial monologues regarding the issues. After listening to her callers’ woes, she normally dispenses direct, no-nonsense responses to queries and problems.

She has also written several self-help books, the most notable of which are Ten Stupid Things Women Do To Mess Up Their Lives and The Proper Care and Feeding of Husbands. In April 2009, Laura Schlessinger released her newest book, In Praise of Stay-At-Home Moms.

Laura Schlessinger has received several awards from conservative organizations and the media. At present, an estimated 8 million listeners tune in to Dr. Laura every day.
